Welcome to Family Literacy Hub, a resource kit for YOU. In this resource kit, you can find research-based materials and practical strategies that you can use to help push your child's literacy skills, both at home or in the classroom. :)
My name is Teagan Ka. I am a fifth grade teacher in Staten Island, NY, trained in the Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach. I started getting interested in literacy and the Science of Reading during my undergrad years at NYU. Being a teacher, I have unfortunately realized the lack of foundational literacy skills in New York, from elementary students to adults. Through this experience as well as reminiscing on my childhood years, I have gained a newfound passion for anything related to literacy and how kids learn to read. Seeing my students make great progress in their decoding, vocabulary, and comprehension skills encourages me to continue finding more ways to effectively and explicitly teach reading.
In my childhood years, my mother was a large influence on my literacy development. She would read aloud books and stories almost every day, building my literacy and print awareness skills by pointing out the words on the page as she modeled reading. Since she was a baker, she would show me the ingredients after reading the recipe together. She encouraged my love for reading through her animated voices and accents, which made it more interactive and engaging for me.
Mission
My mission for the Family Literacy Hub is to provide families (and classroom teachers) with a practical, easy-to-use literacy resource kit. Here, I will share resources I have collected and personally enjoyed using (including digital, print, and everyday activities) to support children’s literacy skills from birth through secondary grades. Linked to my core values of family-centered learning, everyday literacy, inclusion, and growing together, I am hoping to make literacy accessible and warm for every household.
