Reading Fluency & Prosody
Reading fluency is the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and at an appropriate pace. or speed Prosody means reading with expression—using your voice to sound like natural speech. When children read fluently and with expression, they understand and enjoy what they are reading much more.
Activities for Families
Echo Reading
Read a sentence or short passage aloud first, then have your child repeat it, copying your expression and tone.
This models what fluent reading should sound like. This can be done in isolation or after reading a story together.
This way, students can better understand and hear what a fluent reader sounds like, with repeated practice (Decodable Readers Australia, 2023).
Make It Fun:
Use silly voices (robot, superhero, whisper voice) to keep it playful and engaging.
Keep passages short and repeat as needed. You can also track the words with your finger to support focus.
Choral Reading
Read a passage together with your family at the same time. Doing it together takes unnecessary pressure off your child and builds confidence (Bessette, 2020). Have everyone try to read at the same pace, using the same tonal intonations or prosody while reading.
Make It Fun:
Turn it into a “duet” or pretend you’re performing on stage together.
Great for shy or hesitant readers since they don’t have to read alone.
Readers' Theater
Turn story time into a live show or a mini play where you and your child reads a character’s lines from a script. Focusing on vocal expression, it promotes repeated reading, helping students improve accuracy, pacing, and emotional expression (Reading Rockets). It makes practicing reading fun and engaging.
